HAZARD

The Importance of My Job

Congratulations, you have been chosen as the Hazard (HAZ) officer for this important mission. Your job is to monitor all potential dangers and threats to the Spacecraft and its crew by analyzing debris impact panels on board the Spacecraft.  In the event of an emergency due to large debris, you will be communicating with NRG to help keep the Mission Commander safe.

Your objectives for this mission are:

  • Determine if any large-scale objects pose a threat to Marius, and
  • Keep the Mission Commander safe

You will need to follow every step in these TASK CARDS, without skipping a single step. Be sure to inform the crew if you see any emergencies arise! Do not begin the first step until told to do so by the Mission Commander.

If you need assistance at any point during the mission, send a message to “Help Desk” in the call software CHAT. They are there to answer your questions and provide help for the duration of the mission.

RESEARCH

Follow these directions for researching DEBRIS IMPACT PANELS:

  1. Read the information about debris impact panels in the box labeled BACKGROUND.
BACKGROUND

Large-scale obstacles pose a potential danger to the Spacecraft and its crew. These obstacles include meteoroids and asteroids. To observe any potential dangers from these obstacles, the number of holes in each debris impact panel must be counted accurately. These fast moving objects around the Spacecraft could result in a higher total number of holes. With a higher total number of holes, the crew may be in danger.

Below the list of steps there is a DEBRIS IMPACT DATA LOG for each debris impact panel onboard the Spacecraft. In each DEBRIS IMPACT DATA LOG, you will be recording information you collect from the Mission Commander.

2. Answer the DEBRIS IMPACT RESEARCH QUESTIONS below. Click “Submit” when you finish answering the questions.

Follow these directions for collecting data from DEBRIS IMPACT PANEL #1:

    1. Read the information on safe debris impact panel readings by clicking on the box labeled SAFETY.

    SAFETY

You will be receiving the total number of impact holes from each debris impact panel onboard the Spacecraft, with an example debris impact panel pictured below. The total number of holes will change based on the data sent to you by the Mission Commander. The following are the specific calculations you will need to perform to determine whether or not there is a HAZ emergency for the crew:

    1. The data (number of holes in the impact panel) from yesterday will be in the data logs. Subtract the total number of holes from yesterday from today’s data to see if there has been any significant changes.

    2. If the difference of impact holes between today and the previous mission is fewer than 20, then the crew is safe from any imminent danger of large-scale obstacles.

    3. If the difference of impact holes between today and the previous mission is greater than 20, then there is an imminent danger of large-scale obstacles to the crew onboard the Spacecraft, and there is an emergency.

    2. Locate the CHAT in your call software.

    3. Select “COM” from the drop-down menu.

    4. Type the following message:

This is the HAZ team. Please check the number of holes in Debris Impact Panel #1 as soon as possible.

    5. Once you have typed it in the CHAT, make sure to hit SEND or hit ENTER so that the COM officer can read it and deliver it to the Mission Commander.

    6. Once the Mission Commander has given you the reading for Debris Impact Panel #1, type in the data in the DEBRIS IMPACT PANEL #1 DATA LOG below. Be sure to click “Submit” after answering the questions.

This is HAZ to Marius, Do you read me, over?

    7. Wait for a response from the Mission Commander. If there is no response, press or click the MICROPHONE button to ensure you are not muted, and then repeat the message. If you get a response from the Mission Commander, that means the communication system is working, and you may continue to the next step.

    8. Read to the Mission Commander these instructions to solve the emergency.

This is HAZ. Please check the solar panels for potential damage from the large debris.

9a. If the Mission Commander reports no damage to the solar panels, you may clear the Mission Commander to continue in the mission.

9b. If the Mission Commander reports damage to the solar panels, read the following to the Mission Commander:

This is the HAZ. Based on their data and analysis, the NRG team will be able to help you restore full power to the Marius.

    10. After giving the Mission Commander these directions, you may continue in your task cards to complete your mission objectives.
